Game Preview: Shock Look To Rebound On Star Wars Night
The Oceanside Shock conclude a three-game homestand when they play host to the Minnesota Northern Lights on Sunday evening from Frontwave Arena in Oceanside. It’s the first-ever Star Wars Night for the Shock, a 5pm faceoff. The game will be aired exclusively on the Oceanside Shock YouTube Channel, youtube.com/@OceansideShock.
The Shock and Northern Lights, as well as fellow California teams Stockton Thunder and Fresno Falcons, have all entered the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) as expansion teams, as part of the new Western Conference Frontier Division, which also features Topeka Scarecrows. Baton Rouge, Monroe, Mid-South and Columbus form the Delta Division to wrap up the West. The FPHL consists of 17 teams in four divisions, with all the teams chasing the league’s first-ever three-time consecutive champion, the Binghamton Black Bears, who have claimed the Commissioners Cup in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The Federal Prospects Hockey League is a professional single-A minor hockey league with member clubs across the United States. The FPHL is in its 17th season in 2026-27.
On Friday night, the Shock played one of their strongest games of the season, out-shooting Minnesota 43-29 and taking a 3-2 lead in the third period on back-to-back goals from captain Matt O’Dea. After failing to score on a power play that could have put the game away, the Shock saw the Northern Lights come right down the ice on the next shift to score the equalizer with 3:25 remaining. The goal was scored by the brother duo of Kalix and Kylow Monkman, with Kylow netting on Kalix’s assist, and the two were at it again in sudden-death overtime, with Kalix passing from behind the net to set up Kylow’s game-winning goal. Minnesota’s 4-3 win gave the Shock their third standing point of the season but dropped the team’s record to 1-4-1.
The Shock and Northern Lights will meet a total of eight times this season, with the first two taking place this weekend. Oceanside will travel first to Minnesota for games on November 20 and 21. Minnesota enters Sunday with a 2-2-1 record (5 points). In their first two home games last weekend, the Northern Lights went to overtime both nights, losing once in the 3-on-3 and winning once in a shootout. The club has scored 16 goals and conceded 20 so far. Goaltender Bailey Huber shined on Friday night in earning his first win of the season, stopping 40-of-43 shots.
